The e-Cat and the US Navy

Over the past 6 months or so, a couple of names have been bantered about as to who Andrea Rossi’s mystery customer is for his first e-Cat 1MW plants. The first name put forth many months ago was Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB ), a venture capital firm based in Silicon Valley with a well-established track record of helping new companies get off the ground. Since 1972 they have provided startup capital for companies such as Amazon.com, Sun Microsystems, Electronic Arts , Genentech, Intuit, AOL, Verisign, and Google. Notable names closely associated with this company include NASA rocket scientist K. R. Sridhar, former Vice President Al Gore, and former US Secretary of State and retired US Army General Colin Powell. Talk of KPCB being involved with Andrea Rossi and his e-Cat centered largely around the domain name e-cat.com redirecting to the KPCB web site. Prior to pointing to KPCB, e-cat.com had been owned by Exxon Oil Company for nearly a decade. The domain changed hands just a little over a month before the October 28 demo. During the October 6 demo, Rossi announced that there was a change in customer due to the advice of legal counsel. Shortly after that, the domain for e-cat.com redirected to Google Green. That domain now asks for a user name and password when attempting to access it, with no clue as to ownership and, according to Whois, the domain owner has been made private through domainsbyproxy.com.

Curiously, it was also at the Oct. 6 demo, that the name of Paul Swanson of the U.S. Navy’s SPAWAR was mentioned as one of the guests in attendance. As many know, SPAWAR has been quietly been in involved in cold fusion/LENR research for two decades and have to their credit 23 peer-reviewed papers regarding the technology. As a reference, see the 1-hour video presentation by SPAWAR researchers entitled Twenty-Year History of Lattice-Enabled Nuclear Reactions (LENR) – Hiding in Plain Sight. In the NASA video released on January 12 touting that agency’s interest in LENR, there is an image that appears briefly, from 1:51 to 1:53, of the video that is attributed to SPAWAR (see video still below).

As a side note, SPAWAR research has recently been discontinued but, a US Navy spokesman, James Fallin, was recently quoted thusly by the New Energy Times.

I will confirm SPAWAR plans no further low-energy nuclear reaction (LENR) research. There are other organizations within the federal government that are better aligned to continue research regarding nuclear power. We have taken initial steps to determine how a transition of low-energy nuclear reaction (LENR) research might occur.” link

Given that NASA’s name keeps popping up in this story, one has to wonder whether NASA will ultimately be the US Government Agency that will continue the LENR research begun by SPAWAR. There are strong, nearly undeniable, indications that this has already occurred. See the article NASA and LENR for documentation of these indications. Furthermore, even if the US Navy is the first customer for the e-Cat, much research is still required in terms of optimizing the effect and, obviously, figuring out to a greater degree of certainly exactly what the mechanism of the reaction is.

Going back to the notion that the US Navy is indeed the first customer for the e-Cat, Andrea Rossi himself said at the time of the Oct. 28 demo of his 1MW cold fusion plant that his customer was a military entity and has continued to assert that for many months. As it has been stated here on this site many times, the military would likely want to have the first crack at this technology before it was released into the public domain any way.

In that regard, the US Navy has long been at the forefront of introducing new energy technology into its operations. In May of 2011, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, in a speech at the U.S. Green Building Council Federal Summit in Washington, D.C., stated the following in regards to the Navy leading the way in the introduction of new energy technologies:

“Leading change, particularly in energy, is absolutely nothing new for the Navy and Marine Corps. We have always been on the front of innovation. In the middle of the 19th century, we moved from sail to coal, in the early part of the 20th Century we moved from coal to oil, and then in the 1950s we introduced nuclear power into the Fleet. And every single time, every single time, there were folks who said you’re trading one very proven source of power for an absolutely unproven one, and oh by the way, you don’t have any infrastructure, price is too high. In fact when we moved from sail to coal, a panel of Navy admirals blasted away at it, saying we’ve used wind for literally thousands of years, and where are you going to get these coaling stations that you would have to have all around the world., Another group, equally adamant when we moved from coal to oil, said you’ve got all these coaling stations all over the world. What in the world are you going to do with them if you move to oil? The same thing with nuclear power.” link

I would recommend that readers review the entirety of the speech. In it Secretary Mabus specifically outlines how new energy technology would be of benefit to the military. He also outlines the Navy’s plan to have 50% of its energy come from renewable services by 2020, just 8 short years ago. No doubt this renewable energy will come from a variety of sources but one would be hard-pressed to identify any widely accepted renewable (i.e. solar, wind) energy sources that would allow such a transition in 8 short years. I also am reminded that in an interview in April of 2011, NASA chief scientist Dennis Bushnell listed LENR as the #1 most interesting and promising new energy source. The interview is also interesting for its treatment of a host of other renewables but none of them are as far along in development as LENR, nor would they be necessarily practical for widespread implantation for a military organization like the US Navy.

The Navy connection to Andrea Rossi is perhaps best exemplified by Rossi’s own blog. If one goes to the advisors page on JONP, the second name on the list of advisors is listed as Prof. Michael Melich and his affiliation is listed as the DoD (Department of Defense). Prof. Melich is on the faculty of the US Navy’s Post Graduate School (see link). A company called PHLburg Technologies also lists Michael Melich on its board of directors and touts his credentials thusly:

“MICHAEL E. MELICH , Ph.D., scientific specialty is theoretical and applied physics. Dr. Melich is a senior scientific advisor to the Pentagon, the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, and other world renowned research laboratories, private business, and is a university professor. Dr. Melich is PHLburg’s Chief Scientist.” link

On the company’s web site, on its “Solutions” page, it states the following concerning its purpose and objectives:

“We help Customers solve their technology problems by searching for, identifying, and obtaining the exclusive economic rights to commercially exploit technology.” link

This page goes on to say that they perform this function not only for American companies but also for entities in the former Soviet Union, i.e. Russia, as well. That fact really has nothing to do the gist of this story but I think it is an interesting claim nonetheless.

In light of the above information, one is left to wonder if PHLburg Technologies and/or Prof. Melich are not part of the investor’s trust that Andrea Rossi has recently mentioned as now being a major player in his Leonardo Corp. While he remains CEO, he reports that his interests are now subject to the approval of the trust. The interesting thing about such an investor’s trust is that it allows its members to make important business decisions, much like a board of directors, yet still remain anonymous. In most corporate structures, the board of directors of a company are legally obligated to reveal their identities. This is not the case with an investor’s trust. This structure would be especially useful if members or representatives of a government or military organization were part of said trust. Such entities have been known to set up corporations that allow them to conduct business under the auspices of a private corporation. In the US, the CIA is well-known for this practice, as exemplified by such companies as Air America and Southern Air Transport. If the CIA engages in this sort of activity, it is not really a stretch to imagine that other arms of US Intelligence may do the same, including US Naval Intelligence.

They are unconfirmed reports that Michael Melich is associated with the US Intelligence apparatus in some capacity. Dennis Bushnell of NASA certainly is, as he says as much in the audio link referenced above, claiming to be a regular consultant to such organizations.

Andrea Rossi has done previous work for the US Government. In the early 2000s he developed thermoelectric devices for the DoD. These devices were basically designed to turn heat into electricity. A report by the US Army Corps of Engineers regarding these devices can be found here. In summary, the prototype device worked as advertised and exceeded DoD specifications. Unfortunately, there were problems with mass production of the TEDs and few of the final products worked at all. Some of these same issues regarding workmanship have already appeared with the first manifestations of the e-Cat, with reports of leaky gaskets that apparently have delayed delivery of the 1MW plant to its final destination for several months now. This persistent problem may have also served as the impetus for the formation of an investor’s trust for Leonardo Corp. If the customer is in fact the DoD, more specifically the US Navy, they would certainly have an interest in overseeing production to ensure that the problems that plagued the TEDs do not derail mass production of the e-Cat.

Lastly, I have mentioned previously that this site receives regular visits from well-known corporations as well as government entities from all over the world. One of the most frequent is the US Navy. Individuals using an IP from the US Navy visit this site on an almost daily basis, sometimes several times a day. This site also receives visits from the US Air Force and the facilities of the US Army, but visits by the US Navy outnumber other entities of the US military by a significant degree. At that the very least this indicates more than a passing degree of interest, and may in fact indicate that they are monitoring public awareness and knowledge of this story.

ARTICLE UPDATE

Here is another interesting piece of information that I failed to mention when I originally posted this article.

There has been much hubbub of late regarding Andrea Rossi no longer working with National Instruments, claiming that his customer preferred to work with a company with whom they were already doing business. Since that time, Rossi has mentioned several times that he has been working with Siemens. Of note, Siemens signed a contract with the US Navy to manage a portion of their power metering systems in March of 2010. Although Rossi has not specifically mentioned Siemens as being the company that has been chosen in lieu of National Instruments, I do find the sudden appearance of Siemens into the conversation interesting, especially in lieu of their work with the US Navy.

On a personal note, I would like to apologize to readers for the length of time in between articles as of late. While news has admittedly been slow over the last couple of weeks, I have also been preparing to enter the ranks of married men in short order. Dr. Miley Re-emerges

Dr. George Miley, affiliate professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is set to re-emerge from what seems like winter hibernation. After announcing in late October (see video, 5:15 mark) that development of his LENR cell was reaching the stage of commercialization, very little was heard from him. He did give a report to cold fusion librarian and advocate Jed Rothwell on the progress of his work, and Dr. Brian Ahern did mention that Dr. Miley’s cell had achieved self-sustain capability in slides from a planned December 7 presentation that he abruptly canceled. Dr. Ahern has worked for several years in association with the Ames National Laboratory to produce the nano-materials used by Dr. Miley, and reportedly Dr. Ahern himself, in their LENR research.

Unfortunately, the last news about Dr. Miley’s research group was that it was disbanding due to both financial constraints and graduate students getting on with their lives. This seemed a curious and disappointing turn of events given Dr. Miley’s stated optimism about his work and how far along it apparently was. In multiple posts over the last several months Tom Baccei and myself have wondered aloud as to the fate of the work of the Miley group.

Thankfully, to many of us who continue to watch the unfolding cold fusion saga, Dr. Miley is still actively pursuing commercialization of his LENR cell. He is set to give a presentation on March 23 at the Emerging Technologies for Space conference in The Woodlands, Texas, a suburb of Houston. An abstract of his presentation has been released and can be found here. It is entitled “A Game-Changing Power Source Based on Low Energy Nuclear Reactions (LENRs).”

Right now, development of Dr. Miley’s cell is centered on providing a replacement power source for NASA space probes. These probes are powered by what is known as a radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG), which currently use plutonium-238 (Pu238) as an energy source. Pu238 is being phased out as a power source for these probes and NASA is in need of a new one. Dr. Miley feels his cell can provide that. In October of 2011, Dr. Miley stated:

“We are talking to the NASA people about simply putting our own cell right here (pointing to red part of the below diagram) producing heat, the same way as plutonium-239(8), and so this lends itself to a fairly quick adaptation of the unit.

In October, Dr. Miley felt his cell did need some more development but not a significant amount. He stated:

“At the moment we can run continuously at levels of a few hundred watts. We would like to go to a level of about 300 watts.”

Accordingly to the above referenced abstract, the Miley cell can now reliably run at 350 watts/kg. Admittedly, 350 watts/kg is not a significant amount of power but Dr. Miley feels that this decisively provides proof-of-principle and…

“While our present test units are at lab bench power levels (multi 100s watts), scaling up to RTG power levels seems quite feasible using larger amounts of nano-particles and an improved heat management design.”

While to this point the development of the Miley cell has been with the view as a replacement RTG power source, Dr. Miley felt even in October that there were other potential commercial applications.

“You know each application would have to have a different structure to it to deliver the power. You know, it can range from hot water heaters, where you don’t convert to electricity, to something that uses electricity where you have something like this.”

As simple and mundane as a water heater sounds, the ability to produce one based on cold fusion/LENR would be a significant milestone in the emergence of this technology. This idea was recently reiterated by NASA senior scientist Dr. Joseph Zawodny in the NASA video released in January. Certainly, exotic uses such in space probes, space planes, rocket ships and the like draw interest and can be awe-inspiring, but when the technology can be used in something as ubiquitous (yet important) as a water heater, it will have truly arrived. Although many people don’t think of this way, current commercial nuclear reactors are just large water heaters, which produce steam to drive turbines to produce electricity.

Water heaters aside, once again NASA finds itself in the midst of the developing LENR story. In addition to discussions with Dr. Miley, NASA has also shown in interest in the devices of Andrea Rossi, Francesco Piantelli and, according to this investor’s blog, the NanoSpire LENR device of a one-time senior engineer at Lockheed, Mark LeClair. The co-author of the now “in vogue” Widom-Larsen Theory, Lewis Larsen, reportedly tutored NASA senior scientist Dr. Joseph Zawodny on his theory over the course of 6 months. Since the upcoming presentation in Texas is focused on emerging space technologies, I cannot imagine NASA representatives will not be present. The site of the conference is a 1 hour drive from NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX.

If NASA passes on the Miley device for implantation in its RTGs, hopefully Dr. Miley will be able to find the funding to upscale his device for commercial applications. He is a scientist, not a businessman and although he has laid out a road map to building a prototype, the road to commercialization is somewhat different and I would surmise he could use the help of a corporate or investment partner to bring his cell to market. The current power density reported by Dr. Miley for his cell are in line with those claimed by Andrea Rossi for the e-Cat.

As an important note, aside from the use of cold fusion/LENR as a power source, some cell designs have been reported the added benefit of the ability to neutralize radioactive waste from traditional fission reactors. While Dr. Miley does make this claim regarding his current cell, he did receive peer-reviewed funding from the DOE to study this capability in 1999. Unfortunately, before his group received even a dime of funding, the grant was revoked after protest by a group of vehement cold fusion critics including Robert Park and John Huizenga. After the grant was approved, the DOE subsequently held a “secret review” of the proposal and funding was subsequently withdrawn (read more). Robert Park will appear in the upcoming cold fusion film “The Believers.” I would recommend going to see that film when it is released, and booing loudly whenever he appears.

As a final note, in addition to the planned presentation by Dr. Miley in Texas on March 23, Dr. Y.E. Kim of Purdue University is also scheduled to give a presentation. Dr. Kim is the author of the Theory of Bose–Einstein condensation mechanism for deuteron-induced nuclear reactions in micro/nano-scale metal grains and particles, another credible LENR explanation (yes, it has been peer-reviewed). It would appear, according to the slides from Dr. Miley’s presentation at the World Green Symposium in 2011, that this is his preferred theory for the reaction.

Belgian LANR Patents

In work done over many years, a Belgian industrial chemist and patent attorney, Joannes Van den Bogaert, had several LANR patents granted in his home country of Belgium. While the devices are different in many ways from those currently being researched in the LENR/LANR arena, they also bear striking similarities to them. Those similarities are: The same metals, nano-particles, lattices, vortexes, some input energy source, hydrogen (deuterium), liquid cooling etc, and the release of energy in the form of heat, by overcoming the Coulomb barrier. The patents in question were originally written and submitted in Flemish and have existed in obscurity until now. They were issued some 20 years ago and Mr. Van den Bogaert has translated two of these patents into English for the purpose of wider viewing and dissemination. A third patent (BE1003296) was sequestered by Belgium Ministry of Defense for a period of time, apparently due to safety concerns, and an English translation is not currently available. The two available patents can be viewed and downloaded by clicking the following patent numbers, BE1002780 and BE1002781.

My first impression is that the same phenomenon is involved as the many and varied LENR/LANR results over the years. They perhaps would be useful additions to development efforts, but that is hard to say at this moment.

In addition, Mr. Van den Bogaert who is a chemist, developed a theory attempting to explain the reactions observed. A very brief examination of the theories shows that a serious mathematical analysis regarding the source of mass in particles, and its relationship to spin, and the foundation of a means by which a “spin vortex” might give rise to the creation of particles, and anti-particles. I am not qualified to comment on the potential validity of this theory, but I will make a few general comments about it.

This theory, like the Wladimir Guglinski theories found at the Journal for Nuclear Physics website (Rossi’s site), and several other theories, including the Widom-Larson theory now in vogue, is reductionist in nature. It seeks to understand the phenomenon at a subatomic level, and basically competes with the standard model (although Widom-Larson is largely consistent with the standard model). The problem for these theories is that the standard model explains so much, so accurately (by far the most precise predictive tool ever discovered) that any proposed replacement theory would have an immense burden in supplanting it. While there are areas where the standard theory is not an exact match to experiment, it seems quite unlikely that the Van den Bogaert theory would stand up to serious scrutiny. That being said, it IS clear that LENR/LANR phenomena do seem to lie outside of the predictive power in any current physical theories. It is my belief that LENR/LANR is emergent from the the properties of quantum sized particles, and only exists in a lattice of deuteride in a particular size range (see Ahern’s slides). I have struggled to grasp Mr. Van den Bogaerts theories and compare them to the little I actually know of the standard theory, and hope that someone far more trained than I will take the time to comment more fully.

There is no doubt that there is a battle raging at the outskirts of science, and it will not go away. As far back as 120 years ago, it was thought that science had completed it’s work and all that was left to do was add more and more detail. That is except for a few stray threads, like black body radiation and the speed of light thru the ether. These few stray threads led to a revolution in physics so profound as to stagger the mind. Bertrand Russell, the philosopher/mathematician, along with Alfred Whitehead, thought that mathematics was complete, and were working on an algebra which would encompass ALL of it. They almost succeeded but, thanks largely to the intellectual honesty of Russell and the few pernicious paradoxes which he could not overcome, he concluded that the quest was in vain. That was followed not too long after by Curt Godell, who put a stake through the heart of the logical positivists with his incompleteness theory.

Physics now plods along in the pristine clarity of string theory and, while it is a remarkable intellectual and mathematical accomplishment, it has left the realm of science behind. The few vexing problems, the incompatibility of the classical and the quantum worlds, have not gone away. Super conductivity, quantum computing, strange “action at a distance” via Bell’s inequality and startling modern demonstrations of it’s repercussions will not go away…and the LENR phenomena will not go away.

The problem with Dick Smith in his honest (perhaps) efforts to help, is that exposing a fraud, while useful, is trivial compared to the results he might obtain by funding a PLAN X prize…and NOT for the production of a mega or kilo watt, but for ONE SIMPLE PROOF, an experiment ANYONE can do, that verify LENR/LANR are unavoidably real phenomena. The tiny thread, sir, follow the tiny thread! Rossi and DGT do not matter, they are irrelevant. If they have the magic sauce GREAT and, if not, who cares. The tiny thread is unavoidable, and tugging on it seems more than likely to produce miracles like computers and lasers and television and, well, the whole modern world that resulted from pulling on that small thread 120 years ago.

Look everyone who cares about LENR, either skeptic or fanatic, the repercussions are so profound that it is impossible to avoid the fact that they (Rossi and DGT) must be under tremendous stress if they DO have a practical working device. It is inconceivable that governments, and the Military Financial Complex, are not poised to move on them in one way or another. So, Mr. Smith, having read at ecatnews.com that you are extending your $1M offer to ANYONE who can demonstrate a 1 kilowatt device – BRAVO! But please consider amending your offer to include any device which reliably produces an unambiguous result of any size, so long as that device can be made available to anyone who cares to test it hands on. We must have the “Thread that Roared!” to shake the physics community out of its angels wrapped in string self hypnosis!

Here’s another urban myth propagated by the pathoskeps: Large amounts of money has already been spent in pursuit of LENR/LANR, and nothing to show for it. Well, I doubt it! Can some one of the expert historians out there put together a credible spreadsheet of how many projects and how much money has gone into LENR/LANR and then compare it to the money spent researching Rogaine, or Solar Power, or Viagra, Hot fusion, or the search for the Higgs, which, if found will be fascinating, but will have NO practical value!

I wish to thank Mr. Van den Bogaert for his work, and invite him very much to comment here regarding my clearly amateur representation of his theories. I do not say they are wrong, I simply say they have an awfully steep hill to climb!

To the relief of many pathoskeps, I will be off on vacation for ten days, but will have an iPad with me, so I will watch the e-Cat news, and make some small, badly typed postings if I am so moved.

Unfortunately, he flew off to his mid-winter trip to a warm beach and neglected to upload his draft in a manner where he could be proper credit for all the time he put in. Definitely a forgivable (and understandable) oversight, don’t you think?

In addition to Tom’s assessment of the patents, I also had the good fortune of having Dr. Edmund Storms take the time to review the patent documents as well. He was very gracious to do so and provided his assessment to both Mr. Van den Bogaert and to myself. His assessment was similar to Tom’s but, more specifically, he felt the patents had no practical utility. In an e-mail he stated:

“As is well known, a useful patent must show exactly how an idea can be reduced to practice. If the idea can be explained well enough to show how various paths can be taken to achieve a successful application, so much the better. People make a mistake when they propose a mechanism that cannot operate based on well established experience in nuclear physics, is known not to occur, or is so general or imaginative to have no theoretical support. In addition, the phenomenon is now sufficiently well understood that a collection of behaviors must all be explained at the same time if the proposed mechanism is to be believed. I have given up trying to explain how each proposed mechanism violates either conventional scientific understanding or what is now known about the phenomenon. Eventually, someone will find the correct idea and the discussion will focus in more productive directions. Unfortunately, this has not yet happened. “

In yet another e-mail, he added: “However, everyone in the field welcomes any interest we can attract even when the contribution is not particularly useful, as is the case with the patents.”

To that, I would just like to add that although the patents may not have practical utility, I find them interesting for a number of reasons. As Tom pointed out, they do cover ideas now widely considered in the field, including the use of nano-particles, emphasis on the importance of the lattice in the reactions and use of the gas phase. He WAS SUCCESSFUL in getting his work patented, something that many researchers have failed to do for a variety of reasons, often prejudicial. And, regardless of the seeming lack of practical utility of the documented patents, one of them (which is unfortunately not available for review) was considered to be of enough interest to be sequestered by the Belgium Ministry of Defense.

In some ways, Mr. Van den Bogaert was ahead of his time and my hat is off to him in that regard. Also, although Mr. Van den Bogaert is aware of the criticisms of his work, he is willing to make himself available to answer your questions on this site. I thank him for this willingness to so and would request all readers to be respectful in your questions to him whether you agree with his ideas or not.

Here is an excerpt from an e-mail he sent to me that gives just a little more insight to his ideas contained in the patents and his awareness of potential controversy:

“I have read the e-mail directed to you by Dr. Ed Storms and as a former patent agent I fully agree that the basis for a useful patent is reduction to practice. I must confess that in the last early nineties I tried to circumvent the Fleischmann-Pons electrolysis method for “cold fusion” and I directed my ideas to “cold fusion” in gas phase. At that time the terminology “lattice assisted nuclear reaction” (LANR) did not exist yet. I tried to understand how a Coulomb barrier could be surmounted in a deuterium absorbing crystal, e.g. Pd, and found it acceptable to introduce “electrostatic wetting” as a phenomenon having an analogy to the idea of proton orbital broadening in the presence of a strong surplus of electrons as explained in BE1002780. I am of the opinion that orbital condensation of single particles (e-) is a well known phenomenon in carbon-type organic chemistry and may also work in metal crystals having absorbed deuterons in the presence of an electron sea being present in a conductive metal cathode. Free protons are elementary particles that may behave as electrons and I consider them not as tiny point particles but flexible enough to become a large smeared out orbital associated with the surplus electrons in the crystal lattice of the metal. Reversing the polarity of the cathode (becoming anode) will drain off the electrons very rapidly but leave the protons captured between the metal cations of the crystal grid and make them to condense with the neutrons to form cations , e.g. triton+, that can leave the crystal lattice, (helium cannot from Pd) hereby resulting in mass defect.”

NI Corroborates Rossi Statements

There has been some concern recently in e-Cat Nation regarding the news that Leonardo Corp is no longer working with National Instruments and is not currently a customer of that company. Some in fact have been quite crestfallen over this news, as National Instruments has been one of the few well-known companies or institutions that has been willing (or been allowed) to admit an association with Rossi. Others of course have been quite elated, using this news as proof positive that Rossi is a fraud and that he has been lying about or misrepresenting his relationship with National Instruments all along. Admittedly, I have been disappointed by the recent news myself. However, I had a sense that there was more to this story than was perhaps apparent and, as usual, that sense was correct.

In order to get more clarity on the matter, I contacted Julia Betts, Corporate Communications and Investor Relations Manager for National Instruments, regarding NI’s relationship with Leonardo Corp. She in fact was very friendly and helpful, and did in fact provide a very important clarification that many of us missed and others perhaps intentionally obscured.

While Ms. Betts reiterated once again that Leonardo Corp was not currently a customer of National Instruments, there have been ongoing discussions between the two parties. Discussion is the key word here. Many, including myself, have taken this to mean there have been merely some preliminary discussions regarding a business relationship between the two parties. After my conversation with Ms. Betts, it would seem that the word “discussion” as used in this context has a meaning with somewhat more depth, with that meaning being ongoing technical collaboration between the parties. This collaboration has been at the level that Rossi has frequently alluded to in his comments on JONP and, specifically, to comments he made earlier this week. Over the past several months he has frequently stated that he was working with National Instruments on E-Cat development. I specifically asked Ms. Betts if these statements were exaggerations or outright lies on Mr. Rossi’s part and she informed me that THEY WERE NOT, and that indeed Mr. Rossi has been portraying Leonardo Corp’s work with National Instruments accurately. She e-mailed me this link specifically as an accurate accounting of the relationship that has existed between the two parties. It of course is Rossi’s accounting that he posted on his blog earlier this week, as it appeared in article on Independent eCat News (it would appear that Ms. Betts is aware as anyone who has followed this story how bloody difficult it is to read JONP).

I did also ask Ms. Betts about NI’s official position on the whole field of LENR, to which she reiterated the sentiments expressed in previously released statements, namely that LENR is intriguing and has potential. I find that view a breath of fresh air in comparison to two decades old (and continuing) calls of fraud and “junk science.” I think it represents an evolution of thought about the technology from even a couple of months ago when official statements from National Instruments seemed to be somewhat more equivocal. One could surmise that after working with the technology for even a couple of months they have seen the stated potential and feel comfortable enough to publicly include it in the technologies with which they feel their systems are appropriate. Again, here is an official statement released by National Instruments recently and forwarded to me again today by Ms. Betts:

“NI platforms can be used for LENR applications, particularly the National Instruments Reconfigurable I/O (RIO) platform that is based on FPGA (field programmable gate array) technology for the control and monitoring needs. The FPGAs are programmable integrated circuits that offer true parallelism, high-speed analysis of data and a high level of reliability needed for control and monitoring applications. We do think the field of LENR is an intriguing research area that has potential to impact the energy crisis that is facing the world. NI believes in providing the right tools and platforms to enable engineers and scientists to focus on innovation and solving the grand engineering challenges such as energy from fusion, cancer therapy in the field of medicine and smart grids for better urban infrastructure, to name a few. National Instruments is working with Universities and Research Centers around the world to empower researchers and scientists who are working on magnetic confined fusion, inertial confined fusion and Low Energy Nuclear Reaction.”

No other company of this size and pedigree has ever made anything close to such a statement in support of LENR. Bravo NI. It is regrettable that any collaboration between NI and Leonardo Corp has ended, but at least now other researchers know they have a supporter in the corporate world. I think that this can be seen as a huge step in terms of respectability for the technology, regardless of the setback it MAY APPEAR to be for Andrea Rossi and Leonardo, Corp.

In view of NI’s openness to LENR, I did inform Ms. Bettis, that soon on this site I will post an article and details regarding an LANR (lattice-assisted nuclear reaction) patent that has been translated into English and made available to this site by its author. The patent was originally granted in Belgium in the 1990s but has since lapsed. The author has requested that I publish that information here as he wishes it to be shared and widely disseminated. I hope that all readers, laymen, scientists and those from the corporate world will find the patent of interest and I hope it will foster a better understanding of the cold fusion phenomenon. The patent includes quite an interesting theory on LANR (the authors preferred term) and I think it will be of interest to many.

As a closing note, I would just like to add that although National instruments is the first to come out in public support of this technology, I know that that there are many more watching this unfolding saga. Note, I said KNOW. I am not making unfounded assumptions here. There are Individuals from some very well-known entities, business and government, who make almost daily visits to this site. They sometimes visit in small groups and view the same article, as if they were simultaneously studying the information contained therein. I am not mentioning this to violate confidences, that is not my intent. I only mention it to let the others visiting from similar entities that they are not alone in sharing in an interest in this technology. As Tom Baccei has encouraged all readers to do as part of PLAN X, I would specifically encourage corporate and government entities to be active in pursuing cold fusion/LENR. Some no doubt wish it would just go away, but to others it provides an incredible opportunity. Now is not the time to be passive. To do so will mean that you will be beaten to the punch by either those who oppose it or those who wish to beat you to the market with their version. Now is the time for boldness, not caution.

Update: Julia Betts of National Instruments contacted me this morning and asked that I make two clarifications to this article. While Ms. Betts and National Instruments are overall satisfied with the tone and accuracy of this piece, there are some things they would like clarified to avoid any misunderstanding.

NI generally concurs with the characterization of their relationship with Leonardo Corp as portrayed by Andrea Rossi, and as outlined by his statements made recently and linked to above. However, they cannot vouch for EVERY statement he has made regarding their relationship in the last couple of months as it is difficult to be aware of everything he has said.
The discussions and technical collaboration that NI engaged in with Leonardo Corp included NI making preliminary suggestions on platforms that could be used for the control system. These types of discussions are part of standard practice in order to assess and accurately meet a customers needs.

PLAN X: The John Galt Manifold

The responses to “Three Scenarios” has provided a number of astute and constructive ideas. Obviously starting a thought process is like starting a painting, in that the focus is on the overall pattern and not on specific details. While the stimulus for writing these articles is the advent of the LENR age, it has become clear to me that the real issue at hand is not the technical quality of “Peter the Hermit’s” steam, nor how well grounded he is. It is based on the premise that LENR is an actual, reproducible phenomenon that it is capable, given basic science, engineering and development, of revolutionizing the energy production for virtually every aspect of human life. Once again, to help us remember to keep ourselves better grounded than Mr. Rossi’s experiments, I must acknowledge that I have no more absolute, hands on, unassailable proof of LENR’s existence that than anyone else. While I remain skeptical in a non-pathological manner, I think it IS rational to proceed in thinking about how the birth pains of this new world will be felt, and to anticipate the struggle that is inevitable for control of the final form of the metamorphoses promising to sweep the world, or even whether such a transformation is desirable.

So, in the painting of this “world in transformation” the first icon of control I envisioned was the MFC (Military Financial Complex), but it is clear that that is too broad a brushstroke. While there is a logical grouping we can call the MFC, whose agenda would surely include the quest for control over this new energy source and for the perception of it by PlanetMind, it is by no means the only source of power in this world. Our agenda of promoting the rapid and complete development of LENR power and the rapid distribution of the technology, certainly must look for John Galt with a much more nuanced way.

The question for Ayn Rand was “Who is John Galt?” To that I propose the equally important question of “Where is John Galt?” Who and where are the powers in the world in a position to effect the evolution of the LENR revolution? When viewed from afar, it is easy enough to see the MFC as the major player. Such a logical grouping is no doubt sensible and for most of us (see the Three Scenarios poll) it is a way of grappling with the absurd lack of serious penetration of the LENR story into PlanetMind, and the sinful lack of serious investment to get this discovery past the three ring circus, Mad Hatter phase of Rossi and Defkalion. But, of course, there are others!

So, once again, a continuum! Only this time it is more of a manifold, a more than two dimensioned continuum, but of course with the added complication that one parameter can and does affect the other.

On the financial axis, on one end is the MFC, at the opposite end is a logical grouping we can call the PGFA, the “Progressive, Green, Futuristic Alliance”. This would be those who have surplus wealth and use it to fund and promote any number of progressive, green and mostly “liberal” goals. Paul Allen, Richard Branson, Bill Gates etc. Not to mention Sidney Kimmel, who has already ponied up funds to promote LENR research at U of Missouri.

In the middle of this axis is the RSA crowd (Rich, Stupid Assholes), who know nothing of how to use their wealth in any way other than as personal excess and aggrandizement . Go to Monte Carlo and look around if you want to get an idea of what this group is about.

The other axis of the John Galt manifold is the intellectual/communication axis. It is the “MemeSpace” axis, where ideas compete. Financial control of the MemeSpace has been unraveled by the advent of the Internet, and this has changed the game! It is easy to see that the establishment (read expensive) media sources have certainly stonewalled the LENR story, and the leakage into the mainstream has been slow and mostly of a pathoskep bent. So one end of the MemeSpace axis of the John Galt manifold is the establishment media. Their allies are the pathoskeps and moles, who infiltrate and try to dominate the webscape with negativity, mockery and puerile intellectualism; character assassinations of one sort or another aimed at specific individuals by supposed “experts,” who clearly are the worst sort of “Trojan Horse” cynics. Start with Steven Krivit as an example of a supposed advocate of LENR development, who spends his idle hours attacking Rossi in ways that are sometimes valid but often quite ridiculous.

The other end of the MemeSpace axis from the establishment media on the John Galt manifold is, well, us! Bloggers and dreamers. The “paranoid” and the visionaries of a future that has been stolen from us all. I STILL want my future back!

In the middle of this axis? Fat, stoned, give a fuck patsies, pursaps (Purchasing Sapiens) who are the target of most advertising, with a rigid, unchanging world view, etc. etc. These are the dense, unchanging robots in our midst (or rather we are in THEIR midst). These are the time machine transports from the dark ages, who believe that all knowledge is contained in the ancient books and it is useless, or even evil, to attempt generating any new knowledge. If you are ever burnt at the stake, these folks will be there with their Zippos and sparklers.

So, there it is, a more nuanced view of the “power establishment”. As always this quest for PLAN X only goes somewhere if you join in, add “logical power groups” which I have not identified. Encourage, defile or dispute me. Call me insane, but STOP BEING A PASSIVE OBSERVER in this war for the future of humanity. As they say “life is like a shit sandwich: the more bread you have, the less shit you have to eat”. I say “life is like a fistfight: the longer you sit on your hands the more knuckles you have to eat!”

So, let us think this all through and not just sit on our hands and complain! And, you know, even if LENR and “Peter the Hermit” and Defkalion are all just a cruel hoax, what is there to lose? This is a great subject for use of Pascal’s wager for the existence of God. If you believe and you are right, infinite reward; if you are wrong, what did you lose? Nothing! The flip side? If you do not believe, what is gained if you are right…nothing, and what do you lose if wrong…everything! Apply it here. In the big picture of what we humans spend our wealth on, what would a few billion spent in an intense search for the LENR truth really mean? Maybe no lipstick or beer nuts for a year…or maybe one fewer B2 bomber, or nuclear missile, or gaudy yacht at St. Moritz. If it is all a scam, that’s what we would lose. But if it pans out — the future is back!

In coming days it is my intention to write an “open letter” to each of these groups, and maybe a few more. I will simply be firing off memes! Some may even hit their mark. This is the only way I know to have even a small bit of effect on this glorious, hideous and always entertaining emergence of the LENR world. PLAN X: Three Scenarios

OK! There are a lot of very intelligent people out there who find the idea of active conspiracies, whose aim is to control and “own” LENR energy generation – delay its rollout until such time as they have devised an implemented a plan for control, and assure a military advantage for their side – as “Paranoid!” It’s too late to stop it. They would never do that to us! My response is “Bah, Humbug!”

Consider these three possible realities.

1. YOU know about the advent of the LENR age, because of the many successful efforts to replicate the phenomenon, the many recent patents applied for in the field, and the side show now being presented to us by Defkalion and Andrea Rossi. But THEY do NOT know about it – the president or his highest level staff, the ultra rich, the most highly placed military, CEOs etc. at the largest energy, financial and related industries.

2. They DO know about LENR breakthroughs, but will let nature and capitalism run it’s course for the good of humanity. After all, they stand to make even more money because they have the capital to take advantage of the opportunities the fledgling industry presents.

3. They DO know about the LENR breakthroughs, and are making every effort to control and eventually own the entire LENR industry for their own good and long term security.

First, I do not like debates with the “missing middle,” so I actively invite anyone to add to this little list. I could, of course, create a good bit more of a continuum between the three. You know, like between one and two, something like “They’ve heard of this crap but don’t believe it for a heartbeat”, or between two and three “They can’t control Rossi and Defkalion, but they’ll get their people going on this ASAP, and try to catch up and own at least a part of it”. But, I think the list does accurately define a continuum of possible states regarding the current knowledge and intent of the Military/Financial Complex, which for all intents and purposes runs the world.

It seems faintly possible that scenario one is in play. Mid-level sycophants might be very reluctant to stick their neck out too far in convincing those above them that this whole crazy impending transformation of society is in fact REAL. It IS possible that the rigidity of the hierarchy will provide the seeds of its own eventual extinction. I’m afraid that I might be guilty of overestimating the intelligence of at least some of the MFC (Military/Financial Complex). I cannot imagine being in their position and NOT having specialists watching for exactly the kind of scenarios which now presents itself. But, considering the absolute doltishness of various empires in their later stages, who knows? Would Nero have listened? What about King George III and the American Revolution? How about Hitler or Stalin? So, I guess this end of the spectrum might possibly be how it will go, much to my delight (“delight” is much too weak a word! Something like “giddy, orgasmic ecstasy” might be better, but, it IS a figure of speech!)

My belief is that the reality is somewhere much closer to scenario three. I just cannot imagine anyone at the top of the MFC passively watching this all evolve because, at some point, it will have developed to the point that it IS past their control. Maybe that is already the case, but I don’t think so. If I were in their position, I would, beyond any shadow of a doubt, be up to my elbows in trying to get a handle on the whole ball of nickel. How could they not? They should! It would be beyond any defense if they were simply “ambushed” by all this. If the military lost the opportunity to develop and secure an advantage as huge as this they would be rounded up, lined up and strung up in short order. The electorate would never forgive elected officials for not having this power source, largely developed and verified at NASA and SPAWAR, used as a club for American hegemony. Don’t you think?

Question is, what do the few hundred thousand of us, who ARE aware of the vast potential of this for the future of the human race, do in the face of such powerful, secretive and ruthless authority? The spectrum of possibilities is actually sitting close to the scenario three end, in my opinion, and the only recourse is PLAN X! Publish, Disseminate, Translate and Finance. For once the REST of us are in a position to compete in the meme-space and for the awareness of PlanetMind. Keep spreading the word, and wait for the chance to actually take part in a world-wide, people financed and controlled effort to let LENR knowledge and technology truly enter the public domain.

Cold Fusion, Oil and the US Dollar

In the last few articles, an attempt has been made on this site to explore some real world scenarios that may be taking place behind the scenes in regards to cold fusion and how government and otherwise influential entities, like corporations and the military, may be responding to the increasing body of evidence that cold fusion/LENR has not been debunked and in fact its existence is supported by an ever growing amount of evidence, and being confirmed by a wider and wider group of scientists and researchers. If you have not read Tom Baccei’s previous articles that explore such scenarios, they can be found here and here. These have been attempts to explain why in spite of the growing evidence (actually undeniable if one takes the time to review the evidence contained on this site and elsewhere, especially lenr-canr.org), the defining moment where the reality of this technology becomes apparent to the masses continues to be elusive. NASA’s January 12 LENR video was very nearly the push that was needed to take this subject out of the shadows. It actually succeeded but only for a very brief time. Below are two charts related to LENR searches on Google. The first chart plots Google searches for the term LENR from 2004 to the present. As one can see, searches for both terms spiked around the time of the NASA video, then subsequently plummeted after a statement released by NASA’s Joseph Zawodny the following day in which he feverishly backpedaled in attempt to distance both himself and NASA from years of research and public statements, the bulk of which can be found here. Yet, as disappointing as this backpedaling from NASA was, it is not the first time that this has happened. It is not the first time some great announcement or event surrounding cold fusion has been made or expected, only to ultimately disappear in a cloud of WTF. The first of course was the now infamous announcement of Pons and Fleischmann in 1989, but in the past year alone there have been several such events. These included Andrea Rossi’s anti-climatic October 28 e-Cat “test”, which was made private at the proverbial “last minute,” the actual last minute cancellation of Dr. Brian Ahern’s public LENR presentation in December, and the public proclamations of Dr. George Miley in October that his LENR device was approaching commercialization, followed by the disbanding of his research group just two months later. There was also the revelation that the LENR research of the US Navy’s Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) was being discontinued right around this same time.

Mr. Baccei has outlined possible reasons and scenarios for these apparent cold fusion mirages. He has explored the idea that advent of cold fusion may well produce a level of instability that the ultra-rich and powerful find uncomfortable, to say the least. He has also touched on the possible role the military may reasonably play in keeping this technology “quiet,” at least in the short term.

I would now like to touch on another possible reason for the cold fusion disappearing act. This reason involves the relationship of the US dollar to oil. It has often be speculated that cold fusion, or any technology that competes to supply the world’s energy needs, would be opposed by Big Oil. I really don’t think that is speculation; on the contrary, I think that is fairly obvious that Big Oil would not welcome cold fusion with open arms. I think one would have to be extraordinarily naïve to think otherwise. However, that is not particular issue I have in mind. The relationship of the US dollar and oil goes way beyond what is obvious.

To explain, let me provide an historical background. Up until the early 1970s the currency of the United States was backed by gold, accordingly to the Bretton Woods agreement of the 1940s. The system created by this agreement was an attempt to standardize and stabilize currencies around the world for the sake of international trade, rebuilding of nations following World War II and to prevent some of the circumstances that had resulted in the Great Depression. Under this international agreement, the value of the US dollar was linked to the value of gold. In turn, the value of other international currencies were linked to the dollar accordingly to agreed upon exchange rates. While this system had its critics even at its inception, it did prove to be of great utility to help stabilize the world economy after the calamity of The Great Depression and the Second War War.

In the early 1970s, this arrangement began to become problematic for the United States. It was mired in a long and costly war in Vietnam, the national debt was increasing at an alarming rate, and unemployment and inflation were on the rise. Other nations that were part of the Bretton Woods agreement began to become concerned about the health of the US economy and many began to ask that loaned monies be repaid in the form gold, which the US was obligated to accommodate according to the agreement. As a result, US gold reserves were rapidly diminishing. In response to this, in August of 1971 President Richard Nixon and his advisors decided to implement a variety of economic policies that would subsequently become known as the Nixon Shock. It was so named because the plan was devised and implemented by a small number of men in the executive branch of the US government without the knowledge of the US Congress, business leaders, the American people or any of its allies, and included a decree that the US would no longer honor its obligation to repay its debts in gold accordingly to terms of the Bretton Woods. Obviously, this radical plan came as a shock to the rest of the world when it was actually announced. Some familiar with the proceedings of the inner circle of the Nixon White House reported that it actually took longer to decide when to announce this new plan to the world than it did to devise the plan itself, as it architects knew that it would be unsettling to the world at large. While other nations had already broken the Bretton Woods agreement out of concern for the US’s ability to repay its debts, the sudden withdrawal of the US from this agreement as the principal party basically made the agreement null and void.

As a result of the abandonment of Bretton Woods, all currencies became fiat currencies, based in essence on nothing more than the written promises of the issuing government. The value of many international currencies remained intertwined through a complex system of exchange rates, as before, but now the base of these exchange rates was based on something much less definite then the price of gold. It needs to be pointed out that the price of gold at that time was not as volatile as it is today and had remained relatively stable over a long period of time. A rise in the price of gold from $35/ounce to $40/ounce (roughly 15%) had caused some in the Nixon Administration to panic but this rise had come after a long period of stability in the price of gold and a rise of 15% is small in comparison the volatility of today’s gold market.

It was shortly after the Nixon Shock that the value of the US dollar became intimately linked with oil. With the US currency no longer fixed to something tangible, like the price of gold, and the Bretton Woods agreement now in shambles, the dollar needed something of value to make it competitive with the currencies of other nations who had much better economic fundamentals in terms of inflation, employment, debt, etc., and with which the dollar now had to compete with on the open market. As a result, in 1973 President Nixon reached an agreement with Saudi Arabia whereby that nation would only accept US dollars as payment for oil. The Saudis also agreed to invest any excess profits in US Treasury bonds, notes, and bills, the instruments by which the US Government finances its debt. In exchange, the US agreed to protect the Saudi oil fields from hostile entities including the then Soviet Union. By 1975 all of the members of OPEC had agreed to sell their oil only in US dollars. So in essence, by the mid-1970s the US had gone from backing the dollar with gold to backing it with “black gold“ or oil. This agreement with the Saudis and subsequently with all of OPEC made the dollar the reserve currency for oil. As a result every oil-importing nation now had to have US dollars in order to buy oil. This made the dollar a valuable commodity in and of itself.

This arrangement remains in effect to this day, despite the fact that US not only continues to carry a large debt load but now that debt is the highest it has been in history. How big is the US debt load? I really cannot explain it adequately in detail in the confines of this blog but the illustration below explains it in the simplest terms possible.

In other words, if the US Government were a person or family, it would seriously be looking at claiming bankruptcy about now. In fact, it would have no choice…save for the role of its currency in the trade of the world’s most valuable commodity, oil. By the same token, if oil were to suddenly lose its importance in the scheme of world trade, then its value would drop precipitously and the value of the US dollar would follow. Almost all value the US dollar holds would be lost and, like Cinderella at midnight, it would turn into a pumpkin.

So, in light of the above, one can see that if cold fusion were ever proven to be true beyond all doubt to the masses, it may have serious consequences for the financial system of the United States, and perhaps much of the industrialized world. The US by virtue of its monetary policy may have well painted itself into a corner. Given the dollars intimate relationship with oil, they may not be able to widely implement cold fusion technology, or any revolutionary energy technology, even if were desirous to do so on a variety of other levels.

Yet, there are some important factors to point here. Oil is not the only commodity in the world for which the US dollar is held as the reserve currency. The US serves this purpose for a wide range of products and commodities; however, oil is still the most important commodity for which the dollar holds this status and it holds this status largely because it remains the exclusive currency for oil trade. So, if oil were to become less important in view of the advent of a new energy technology like cold fusion, a drop in the value of US dollar may not be immediate, although it may ultimately be inevitable.

There has been increasing dissatisfaction from many corners of the globe over recent years over the dollars status as a reserve currency, especially amongst the so-called BRIC nations (Brazil, Russia, India and China), with these emerging economic powers feeling increasingly uneasy about the dollars lofty status, especially in view of its enormous public debt. This means that the undercurrent to move away from the US dollar has already begun and the United States already had to start considering the prospect that the dollar may eventually lose its value as a reserve currency. There have been low-level meetings amongst the BRIC powers to discuss alternatives to the dollar in regards to world trade generally and the trade in oil specifically. However, so far the United States has been able to keep this attempt to move away from the dollar largely at bay through a combination of diplomacy and its more unpleasant cousin, i.e. threats of retaliation in the form of economic trade, etc. How long the US will be able to keep the dollar’s detractors at bay remains to be seen and, as a US citizen, HOPEFULLY US leaders have begun to devise a strategy to meet this challenge…preferably a plan that does not involve a unilateral economic “shock.”

So far only two oil exporting nations have openly defied the “dollars only for oil system,” those being Iraq and Iran. The US invaded Iraq in 2003 and is rattling the sword against Iran as this article is being written. It has long been argued that the Iraq War and the impending war with Iran are about oil and the “weapons of mass destruction pretense” is an overblown one. This may well be true and, if it is, the real issue regarding oil is more about its value in propping up the US dollar and the real “weapon of mass destruction” is attempting to lead the world away from the dollar as the oil reserve currency. Iraq certainly had no trouble exchanging its oil directly for food, medical supplies and other commodities with a variety of nations, including those of the EU, in the years prior to the US invasion. Right now Iran is negotiating similar arrangements with two of the BRIC nations, India and China, the two most populous nations on the planet and two nations whose economies and energy demands are expanding rapidly.

I think that it is also important to point here that both India and China have an interest in cold fusion research. India has long been actively researching cold fusion since its first announcement in 1989. Dr. George Miley, who I mentioned at the beginning of this article, is associated with a prominent Chinese university and holds a similar position at that institution as he does at the University of Illinois. One has to wonder that if he cannot finding funding and support for his cold fusion cell in the United States, if the Chinese might be willing to step in. Perhaps that already has occurred. Professor Xing Zhong Li of China’s Tsinghua University is a member of the Cold Fusion Energy, Inc. consortium with Dr. Miley and is reportedly building a prototype cold fusion reaction at that institution. I wonder if he and Dr. Miley have at least had the opportunity to compare notes?

The bottom line here is that in view of the US dollar’s relationship with oil, it may be matter of practical economic policy to not let the e-Cat (or any other LENR device) out of the bag, at least just yet. If this allowed to happen, it may just wipe away the value of the sole source of stability that remains for US currency, oil. The Obama Administration’s recently announced push for clean and renewable energy technologies may be a signal that at least some in the US are seriously considering moving away from oil both as an energy source and a commodity on which it bases its currency, although the latter may prove more problematic than the former considering the debt load the US carries. Without oil the US has very little to pin the value of its currency to.

It will be interesting in the coming days to see how the US, and the world, responds to the continuing and developing cold fusion saga. I wonder if the results of Defkalion independent testing will indeed make it to public view, or if indeed such independent testing will even ever take place. I am also curious to see how the story plays out in regards to the NANOR cold fusion device recently demonstrated at MIT by Dr. Mitchell Swartz, and the reaction to the cold fusion paper just published by MIT professor Dr. Peter Hagelstein (click here to view). And, as always, it will be interesting to see what twists and turns lie ahead for commercialization of the e-Cat.

Although I have attempted to sound a cautionary tone with this article, it is still hard to imagine how the opposition to this technology can ultimately prevail, short of a natural disaster of Biblical proportions or the advent of World War III, in view of the number of people who are working to bring cold fusion to the world. However, I am beginning to come to the sobering realization that if and when this technology is finally able to break through, it very well not be in the United States. The US is at the epicenter of the old paradigm and rarely in human history has a new one emerged in the midst of the old. There are simply too many established powers and entrenched interests, too may obstacles to overcome. Of course I hope I am wrong but hundreds of centuries of recorded human history tell me that I likely will not be. This technology will probably take hold first in one of the BRIC nations or somewhere in the Third World.

Plan X: The Energy Super Bowl

It’s the Energy Super Bowl and the stakes are fantastic. For anyone who has been following the LENR circus at all it is gut check time. If you really, honestly believe that this new source of unlimited, cheap and clean energy is actually there, and NOT “maybe there” or “hopefully there” then there is no way to deny that the Military/Financial complex will stop at nothing to scoop it up, dress it in Red, White and Blue, or a Chinese flag, and march it off to serve in our endless war.

The tools they are using now are covert, and subtle. They are “PSYOPS“. That is why the Mary Yugo/George Hody pathoskep and mole crowd is so effective, even while we all know that their inane, repetitive and pointless debate tricks as just pure noise. You see, they don’t have to convince you they are RIGHT, they just have to plant small seeds that cut into your conviction. If you read their posts at all, they have succeeded! This whole LENR is simply another chapter in the never ending conflict between liberty and control. We all sit in the stands and cheer, and jeer and go for a beer, while the game plays out without us, because most humans are passive, and the Military/Financial complex is NOT PASSIVE in the slightest.

If you REALLY believe that it is log-in time for the LENR age, then you cannot escape the fact that Bilderberg and the Pentagon cannot possibly sit idly by and let this astounding discovery escape into the public domain. If you doubt, in the slightest, if your skepticism allows room for it, the imminence of this Super Bowl fight for control seems silly and distant.

Picture this scenario:

You work for NASA and have, in your lab, achieved incontrovertible proof that LENR is a real and incredibly powerful energy source. You go to your bosses, the guys who sign your paychecks, and tell them all about it in a tense meeting. They, of course, cannot grasp the reality of what you tell them. They require, as each of us do, exceptional proof, but seem unwilling to even stop by to watch the device at work. So, you ambush them at a public seminar and a few of you put together slide shows promoting your discoveries. Even now you are pretty much ignored, until the slides make it into the public arena,. Each step of the way up the ladder of control the resistance to the LENR story is nearly insurmountable, even up to the meeting where some poor second level guy has to tell the president about the “cold fusion” breakthrough, risking ridicule and humiliation. But, in the end, after several layers of denial and proof, the reality of LENR takes hold. This occurs at about the same time the slides are beginning to circulate in the public arena. Too late? No! You have a talk with these boys, and using things like “national security” and “homeland security” and PSYOPS, you diffuse the impact. Remember they are ON THE TEAM. No need to make a big splash denying anything, you just need to trivialize it, plant seeds of doubt, and for goodness sake, don’t let them defend or further their arguments! But give them recognition, like you do any good CIA agent, behind closed doors!

In some areas money dries up (ho ho). Other researchers are talked to by “agencies in the government” appealing on the one side to their patriotism, and the other to fear of the dangers of ignoring the various “national security” laws. And “Thank God for Peter the Hermit” (Rossi). He is such a clown that making him the public face of the LENR breakthrough is perfect. Easy for the pathoskeps to debate in absentia, and when his lone tent pole is chopped down, the laughter at the believers will be heard the world around! To a great degree control of the press is easy since it is all owned by the Money end of the Military/Financial complex. No penetration of the reality of the LENR revolution creeps into PlanetMind, merely a passing whiff, which will be useful to deny any conspiracy in the future.

End scenario.

Plan X is a call to those of us on the 50 yard line at this “Energy Super Bowl” to break through the passivity which is the greatest threat to actually launching a world wide revolution of unimaginable proportions, fueled by LENR; independence from “Big Energy”, “Big Money” and “Big Government,” which right now control the game like a great defensive line. A transformation of PlanetMind is within our grasp and it is inevitable that those at the top of the pile right now would lose that dominance after the LENR revolution.

Sure. It sounds paranoid, and far too sensational…but, think about it for a while from the point of view of actually, truly believing, in a hands on way, that the power of LENR is beyond any doubt. What would YOU do if YOU ran the country, or the biggest energy company or bank? Would you just sit by and watch it play out, or are you in the game? In fact one of the most amazing things about this whole crazy LENR free-for-all, is the degree to which belief is at the heart of it. Win the Meme War and you win the Energy Super Bowl!

NASA and LENR

NASA has been involved in the cold fusion/LENR story since 1989. The purpose of this page is to document NASA’s involvement, at least in part, over the years, starting in the year of Pons and Fleishmann and continuing to the present. I have come across no reports of NASA being involved in LENR research between 1989 and 2003 but of course that does not mean that there was no ongoing research within that organization during that time. Few know that NASA is currently involved in this research, much less that they had done LENR research in 1989. Knowledge of NASA’s interest in this technology has surfaced just over the last couple of years, and the last year specifically.

The information that has become public has been in a piecemeal fashion, and this is post is an attempt to bring some of the information together in one place. As this post is replaced on the front page of this site over the coming weeks by new articles, I will continue to provide it as a reference and a link will be placed in the menu bar at the top of the page. I will add information to this page as it becomes available.

1989

“Tests conducted at NASA Glenn Research Center in 1989 and elsewhere consistently showed evidence of anomalous heat during loading and unloading deuterium into bulk palladium. At one time called “cold fusion,” now called “low-energy nuclear reactions” (LENR), such effects are now published in peer-reviewed journals and are gaining attention and mainstream respectability.”

As the above quote indicates, NASA conducted limited LENR research at Glenn Research Center in 1989 following the announcement of Dr. Martin Fleishmann and Dr. Stanley Pons. According to the report, anomalous heat was observed but no discernible discernible neutrons were detected above background levels. The experiment apparently was conducted to look for neutrons as evidence of fusion, and the anomalous heat was a secondary finding.

The issue of whether “cold fusion” is actually fusion has long been at the center of the debate over this technology and the fact that cold fusion experiments produce either no discernible or miniscule amounts of the byproducts, which theoretical physicists predict must be present in fusion, has been widely used as evidence that the cold fusion is a hoax. This is often done at the expense of ignoring reports of the anomalous heat reported from the experiments. Two decades of research has not resolved the “is it fusion or not” question but the experimental evidence now has repeatedly verified heat production in “cold fusion” cells, which is now either approaching commercially viable levels or already has reached that point.

Of note, the author of the 1989 report regarding NASA’s cold fusion research, found here, Gustav Fralick, also gave a presentation at the 2009 LENR workshop at NASA Glenn Research Center referenced below. Apparently Mr. Fralick and NASA are now convinced there is something to the anomalous heat production, first observed over 20 years ago and in fact it may be of significance.

2003-Present

Reference to NASA involvement in LENR research beginning in 2003 is referenced in the links below.

A NASA document from 2003 entitled, “Advanced Energetics for Aeronautical Applications” contains a discussion on LENR (see pages 44-51). Here is an except that acknowledges a nuclear process is in play and offers an explanation for low level of gamma rays and neutrons associated with cold fusion experiments.

“The first-discovered form of solid-state fusion was that achieved by electrochemically splitting heavy water in order to cause the deuterium to absorb into pieces of palladium metal. When this experiment is conducted according to procedures that have resulted from the work of many researchers since 1989, it is reproducible. The evidence that a nuclear process is occurring is that excess energy in the form of heat (greater than what could be produced by any possible chemical reaction in the system) and helium 4 (He4) (in quantities exceeding any possible contamination) occur. The primary nuclear reaction is:

1D2 + 1D2 → 2He4 + heat

Unlike plasma-phase fusion reactions, the very low production of neutrons and gamma rays (for the amount of excess energy produced) is very noteworthy. Even though the heat originates in palladium metal, the process produces warm liquid electrolyte at temperatures significantly less than the normal boiling point of water. Because the fraction of heat that can be converted into electrical or mechanical energy at this relatively low temperature is small, aircraft propulsion using such an aqueous-phase system is probably not practical. (Pressurization, to achieve a “steam” cycle with the associated steam condenser, would be heavy).”

Let’s just say that it has the potential to change everything for just about everyone on the planet. I had the opportunity to present my work to management and it went exceptionally well. I have complete support for the next phase of the project. The events of the day are still soaking in and I wanted to capture the moment – here. This is really great news for everyone. Wish me well and I’ll do my best for you” link

Dr. Joseph Zawodny made a presentation at NASA in August of 2009 entitled “Low Energy Nuclear Reactions, An Energetics Revolution for ALL of NASA’s Missions And A Solution to Climate Change and the Economic Meltdown.” link

In March of 2011, Dr. Zawodny filed a patent application entitled “Method for Producing Heavy Electrons.” The application is here. NASA was listed as the assignee for this patent.

One month later, in April of 2011, NASA chief scientist Dennis Bushnell gave an interview to EV World that touched on a number of issues related to LENR, including NASA’s active involvement in LENR research. The interview also covered issues such as Mr. Bushnell’s scientific credentials, which include his role as a consultant to the U.S. “intelligence apparatus.” Aside from a discussion of LENR, the interview also touched on other promising and emerging, clean, renewable energy technologies, of which LENR was deemed the most promising. The audio interview can be downloaded here as an MP3. A transcript of the interview as it relates to LENR can be found here. The LENR discussion is from 4:37 to 5:25 and from 7:30 to 13:50. The discussion includes confirmation of replications of the work of Pons and Fleishmann, the work of Andrea Rossi and Sergio Focardi (mentioning that prior to working with Rossi, Focardi had been doing some of the best work worldwide), Widom-Larsen Theory, LENR’s relation to quantum mechanics, use of quantum theory to optimize surface morphology and NASA’s renewed interest in this field beginning in 2006-2007.

The most notable quote from the interview by Bushnell begins at the 11:34 mark when Bushnell states:

“I think were almost over the “we don’t understand it” problem. I think we’re almost over the “this doesn’t produce anything useful” problem. So I think this will go forward fairly rapidly now and, if it does, this is capable of, by itself, completely changing geo-economics, geo-politics and solving climate and energy.”

On September 22, 2011 NASA held an LENR workshop at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. A number of NASA personnel gave presentations in reference to this technology. Below are links to the slide show shows that accompanied these presentations, which were only released to the general public as a result of the Freedom of Information Act requests filed to release them. The information provided below gives an outline of the information presented but, unfortunately, they do lack the lectures that accompanied them. Still, they provide an excellent source of information regarding both LENR and NASA’s interest in the technology.

LENR: Sympathy for the Commander in Chief

The fact that not only news media in general, but also various elected officials and government agencies are deafeningly silent on the subject of LENR, is the very loud elephant in the room.

Consider the following little scenario:

In daily national security briefings along with high-level and quite secret meetings held at both the White House, and Pentagon, the growing reality of LENR breakthroughs has become an issue of extreme concern and debate. This new energy source, now a well-documented and verifiable fact, is a vastly complex issue for the President to direct and manage. The first, and obvious, perception of the LENR breakthrough is that in one massive transformation the US dependence on foreign oil supplies is solved, the unstoppable release of CO2 and other gasses into the atmosphere is brought well within safe limits, the financial doldrums affecting the US and world markets is alleviated by the many new manufacturing and social possibilities made viable by cheap, safe and abundant energy. That’s the good news.

Quickly Think Tanks and other experts in various fields come forth with dire predictions of financial and social instabilities unleashed by the rollout of this life changing technology. The wealthiest 0.1% of Americans have an unshakable commitment to stability. They have no place to go but down in the massive financial shakeups which would be inevitable should LENR be developed and distributed in the most rapid possible scenario. The President is acutely aware that our political system is directly controlled by this established and conservative wealth, or at least marches in lockstep with it. Until ownership and control of this technology can be firmly established by these ultra rich individuals, the President is put under immense pressure to slow down or stop the advent of the LENR age in any manner possible.

Worse still, the military industrial complex sees immediately that regardless of whether the new energy source can be used directly as a game changing weapon or not, it’s use as a power supply for anything from tanks to aerial drones, to aircraft carriers and submarines would produce an unimaginable superiority for the nation deploying it first. Water supply for troops in the desert, air conditioning, no fuel convoys, self-sufficient small units, and even individual special forces and new surveillance techniques, the possibilities are endless. And here to, with the American hegemony in military affairs being its single largest global asset, the drive for stability and an unshifting balance is relentless. The military industrial complex will require several years to develop and deploy the first generation of a military so equipped. Whereas it would seem unlikely to stuff this particular genie back into the bottle, it is clear that delaying the development of LENR capability in the public eye could and should be delayed for as long as possible to preserve the US preeminent military position. Of course, it is clear that other governments and militaries will be highly likely to embark on similar programs once the reality of LENR and its consequences are perceived, so it must be treated as a new “arms race.”

The President asks for an action plan, the intent of which is to impede the development of LENR technology long enough to allow time for the US military establishment to achieve a significant generational lead in the development and deployment of LENR systems, and the establishment of a legal and financial scenario under which social order is protected and preserved. In the end, the President is convinced that by delaying the true extent of the LENR breakthrough from becoming public, the situation can be tidied up and managed in such a way as to achieve those goals while at the same time gradual and controlled development of the public’s perception of LENR can lead to a safe and orderly deployment into the public sector, thus achieving the desirable results of the breakthrough, albeit somewhat delayed. Calculations of the costs/benefits of various scenarios are considered. Immediate rollout, a one to three year delay, a ten year delay etc. The president, being a political man, sees the middle ground of a one to three year delay as prudent, but also would ensures that he and his party can take full credit for this “boon to all mankind”.

End scenario.

I have great sympathy for the quandary presented by the above scenario. I do believe that something like it is in fact what has been going on. Imagine the difficulty of deciding to allow the rapid deployment of LENR devices, with all the benefits, yet with all the drawbacks, at least as seen by you and your constituents. Not an easy set of decisions to make!

I, however, believe there is a great need for developing LENR technology as rapidly as possible. Further, I think that it is of great importance that the established, rigid hierarchy running this country, and much of the world, be shaken up not only for our good but for their own good. This static, stratified social and financial milieu is exactly the environment which led to the collapse of every empire before now. It simply must be broken up, without destroying the vessel in which it resides!

How do they go about slowing the rollout down? Damage has already been done by semi-maverick groups at SPAWAR and NASA, but you use standard disinformation and public relations techniques to drift them out of the public eye. Use moles to discredit and marginalize their results. Isolate Rossi, and either buy him off, scare him off or discredit him. Same goes for Defkalion; just make it so they peter out and drift away or crash and burn loudly and publicly. Dr. Ahern was making presentations in Washington last month. I never heard to who or why? Was there any public awareness of such talks? Where is Dr. Miley? In October at the World Green Symposium he was talking about nearing commercialization with his device. By December there was word that his research group was breaking up due to lack of funding and graduate assistants moving on with their lives. In the NASA video of January 12, Dr. Zawodny, states NASA’s involvement in developing this technology and sounds quite optimistic about its future. A day or two later he writes a blog post that pretty much contradicts the tone of the video of just a few days previous. Rossi spent nearly a year touting his 1MW plant and gives every indication that testing began in October of 2010. Within weeks of the test, he announces the testing will be private for all intents and purposes and there are indications that the customer is a military entity. LENR research at the U.S. Navy’s SPAWAR is apparently discontinued shortly after a 3-year-old, but relatively obscure, video of its researchers espousing this technology is unearthed and publicized across the Internet.

One thing that is clear to me at this point is that large pieces are moving on the LENR chessboard. This is only one of many possible scenarios which could possibly tie together a number of baffling events (at least to me) in the unfolding LENR story. In my thinking about the LENR games now entering the “mid-game.” I have come to realize that I now pretty much discount Andrea Rossi and Defkalion. If they “pop” tomorrow with a home toaster that can brown your bread using a power cell the size of a toothpick, all my concerns and agony in all this would come to an abrupt end. But counting on them, putting all our eggs in that one (well, two) basket(s) is just too fragile. The strong, and to me, convincing evidence of the reality of LENR heat generation just makes it too foolish to follow them into glory or oblivion. They remind me of “Peter the Hermit” who lead the first Crusade, consisting of peasants and drifters, off to conquer the Holy Land in the name of God and, not surprisingly, in the end, to their complete annihilation. I’m sorry Mr. Rossi (in the odd possibility that you read any of this,) but you are marching ahead too far, too fast and with too little substance to long keep the LENR community entranced. And to others who will read this, please share your concept of what might be a unifying theme which explains this whole insanity, with the hermit blasting ahead on what seems more and more like fumes, and the rest, the credible community of researchers, drifting away like the leaves of late autumn.

As a side note, SPAWAR research has recently been discontinued but, a US Navy spokesman, James Fallin, was recently quoted thusly by the New Energy Times.

On the company’s web site, on its “Solutions” page, it states the following concerning its purpose and objectives:

“We help Customers solve their technology problems by searching for, identifying, and obtaining the exclusive economic rights to commercially exploit technology.” link

This page goes on to say that they perform this function not only for American companies but also for entities in the former Soviet Union, i.e. Russia, as well. That fact really has nothing to do the gist of this story but I think it is an interesting claim nonetheless.

They are unconfirmed reports that Michael Melich is associated with the US Intelligence apparatus in some capacity. Dennis Bushnell of NASA certainly is, as he says as much in the audio link referenced above, claiming to be a regular consultant to such organizations.

“We are talking to the NASA people about simply putting our own cell right here (pointing to red part of the below diagram) producing heat, the same way as plutonium-239(8), and so this lends itself to a fairly quick adaptation of the unit.

In October, Dr. Miley felt his cell did need some more development but not a significant amount. He stated:

“At the moment we can run continuously at levels of a few hundred watts. We would like to go to a level of about 300 watts.”

Accordingly to the above referenced abstract, the Miley cell can now reliably run at 350 watts/kg. Admittedly, 350 watts/kg is not a significant amount of power but Dr. Miley feels that this decisively provides proof-of-principle and…

“While our present test units are at lab bench power levels (multi 100s watts), scaling up to RTG power levels seems quite feasible using larger amounts of nano-particles and an improved heat management design.”

While to this point the development of the Miley cell has been with the view as a replacement RTG power source, Dr. Miley felt even in October that there were other potential commercial applications.

“You know each application would have to have a different structure to it to deliver the power. You know, it can range from hot water heaters, where you don’t convert to electricity, to something that uses electricity where you have something like this.”

My first impression is that the same phenomenon is involved as the many and varied LENR/LANR results over the years. They perhaps would be useful additions to development efforts, but that is hard to say at this moment.

I wish to thank Mr. Van den Bogaert for his work, and invite him very much to comment here regarding my clearly amateur representation of his theories. I do not say they are wrong, I simply say they have an awfully steep hill to climb!

To the relief of many pathoskeps, I will be off on vacation for ten days, but will have an iPad with me, so I will watch the e-Cat news, and make some small, badly typed postings if I am so moved.

In yet another e-mail, he added: “However, everyone in the field welcomes any interest we can attract even when the contribution is not particularly useful, as is the case with the patents.”

So, once again, a continuum! Only this time it is more of a manifold, a more than two dimensioned continuum, but of course with the added complication that one parameter can and does affect the other.

In the middle of this axis is the RSA crowd (Rich, Stupid Assholes), who know nothing of how to use their wealth in any way other than as personal excess and aggrandizement . Go to Monte Carlo and look around if you want to get an idea of what this group is about.

The other end of the MemeSpace axis from the establishment media on the John Galt manifold is, well, us! Bloggers and dreamers. The “paranoid” and the visionaries of a future that has been stolen from us all. I STILL want my future back!

Consider these three possible realities.

2. They DO know about LENR breakthroughs, but will let nature and capitalism run it’s course for the good of humanity. After all, they stand to make even more money because they have the capital to take advantage of the opportunities the fledgling industry presents.

3. They DO know about the LENR breakthroughs, and are making every effort to control and eventually own the entire LENR industry for their own good and long term security.
